They are meant to temporarily restrict someone's access to guns when they're a danger to themselves or others. There are red flag laws in five states: California, Connecticut, Oregon, Washington and Indiana. The State Police also has a website where people can apply electronically for a carry permit or to renew an old one. The license-to-carry permit must be renewed every four years, unless the gun owner meets certain requirements for a lifetime license. There have been several attempts in recent years to remove the license-to-carry law in Indiana, but those efforts, so far, have been unsuccessful in the state legislature. Gun owners also should be aware of areas that may prohibit guns, such as private businesses. However, the Indiana State Police advises that gun owners should be aware that carrying a gun in plain sight in public could be threatening to some people. The law doesn't specify whether gun license holders should conceal a handgun or carry it out in the open. A person who is protected by a civil protection order also may carry a handgun without a license for a limited time and under certain conditions.
